Welcome to my World

I am your stereotypical middle-class brat with atypical career aspirations. For most of my life, I’ve followed the script: go to school, work hard, go to college. And honestly, I regret none of these decisions.

But as I sit here, going into my last year as a college student, my last “hurrah,” if you will, I have absolutely no desire to be a doctor, a lawyer or even a business executive.

If you’d asked the Joseph Wilhelm of three years ago to describe his dream career he would have said something along the lines of, “I want to be a kickass sports reporter, flying around the United States, interviewing Peyton Manning and LeBron James in my private jet.”

Three years later, the system has yet to stifle this chippy teenager’s lofty expectations.

Of course, as a far more practical college senior, my expectations have somewhat diminished. Okay, maybe I won’t own a private jet, and there’s a small chance that my subjects will be limited to one sport and maybe even one team. I’m fine with that. But don’t expect me to stop trying until I’m flying around in the journalistic equivalent of Air Force 1.

All joking aside, in the year 2012, I’m just another mouse struggling to find my way to the sweet, succulent, but all too elusive ball of cheese that is journalistic fame. And if you’ve taken the time out of your day to read my writing instead of the seemingly endless supply of sports writing Gold that is available online and doctor’s offices around the world, I am truly grateful and humbled.

I won’t claim to be as skilled or polished as the Titans of my field, but I can guarantee that if anything, this blog will provide you with a different breed of entertainment. Feelings will be hurt and mistakes will occur. Unlike ESPN, Yahoo and FOX Sports, I do not have editors, a copy department or any other bothersome entity to stifle my creativity (or incompetence, depending on how you see it).

As of now, I myself am not entirely sure what this blog will cover. I can assure you that there will be a definite bias towards football, not only because it’s what I know best, but also due to the exciting reality that the college and professional seasons are just a few short months away. If you are not as personally attracted to the modern era’s adaptation of the Roman Coliseum, a condition for which I am most remorseful, rest assured.  I can promise that no sport will be too big or too small for this blog.

My sporting interests go far beyond the intricacies of zone blitzing and seven-step drops. The beauty of sports is that they transcend social, political and geographical boundaries. A game-winning goal, run, point or shot is the same in every language. For this reason, among others, I am intrigued by all sports and will aim to do them justice.

Links to the blog will be available both on Twitter (@Joe_Wilhelm) and on my Facebook account. Enjoy!
